North Korean leader Kim Jong Un called his country a nuclear power, and the question now is whether the United States recognizes it as one, said David Roche, president and global strategist at Independent Strategy The U.S. moving to contain North Korea or take out Kim through an attack would signal China's ineffectiveness at handling the situation, Roche said Both those options would result in an "almost inevitable cold war" between the U.S. and China, he added Oil exports from Iran not likely to be disrupted by protests Oil exports from Iran not likely to be disrupted by protests 10 Hours Ago | 04:07 North Korea called itself a nuclear power on Monday, but the question now is whether U.S. President Donald Trump recognizes the rogue regime as one, a strategist told CNBC Tuesday. That's an important development to watch as actions taken by Trump against North Korea will likely result in a cold war between the U.S. and China, said David Roche, president and global strategist at Independent Strategy. Such a turn of events between the two major powers would have global implications, he added, pointing to how it would affect worldwide trade and investment. Outlining the two likely scenarios that could play out, Roche said the U.S. may try to contain North Korea by having "rings of missiles throughout the Asia Pacific region pointing at Pyongyang" or it could try to remove the hermit nation's leader Kim Jong Un through an attack. Both those scenarios undermine China's influence — they would remove a key strategic ally from Beijing's foreign policy plan — and would lead to an "almost inevitable cold war" between China and the U.S., he said. "One of these two outcomes is pretty likely so what comes out of that is all sorts of things: trade complications, cold wars et cetera. And that, I think, would be a major geopolitical forecast I would make for this year," said Roche. Kim declared North Korea "a peace-loving and responsible nuclear power" in his annual New Year's Day address on Monday, Reuters reported. The leader also said the U.S. should be aware that his country's nuclear forces are now a reality, not a threat, but claimed that he was "open to dialogue" with the South. Pyongyang's testing of its nuclear weapons escalated tensions throughout 2017 and brewed fiery rhetoric between Trump and Kim. But other than some knee-jerk reactions, financial markets mostly shrugged off those developments. Roche said it is hard to predict how Trump will react to Kim's latest declaration, but any actions by the U.S. will hit equities more than other asset classes. "The major casualty out of this would be equities because equities are now based upon such optimism that any really negative impact will affect the most high-flown asset," he said. Source: CNBC.com
  3. How to buy Stellar (XLM) How to buy Stellar Lumens? Unfortunately, we cannot use Shapeshift for this, you need to open an account on the binance (Open Account) exchange. Security Tip: Please use Two-factor Authentication by enabling SMS Auth and Google Auth once you completed your registration. Lower the fees: Enable “Using BNB to pay for fees” to get a 50% discount on all fees. You need to send Eth, BTC or Zcash to Binance in order to trade and buy Stellar, you can either use Luno or Ice3X to buy Bitcoin and Ethereum in South Africa, Alternatively use Changelly for credit card payments. Assuming you have your base crypto currency (Zec, BTC, ETH etc) let’s proceed to buy XLM, on the Binance screen go to the top right and hover on funds and then from the dropdown click on “Deposit Withdrawal”. You will now see a collection of cryptocurrencies, there are all the currencies you can use to deposit to Binance, I chose ZCash because it is lightning fast and cheap compared to Bitcoin. Now search for Zcash and then click on "Deposit", that will give you a Zcash address to send it too, you can click on history to see what the status is of your transfer, Binance applies the funds after 2 confirmations. Now that you have Zcash, we need to change that Zcash for BTC since all the coins on Binance trades as BTC pairs (Ideally you want to deposit BTC straight to Binance, but the fees and speed of BTC does not impress me so I prefer Zcash.) To trade your zcash for BTC, navigate to the top left and hover over “Exchange” then from the dropdown click on basic, you will see the following screen: Now search for the ZEC/BTC pair in box 3 and then sell the Zcash for Bitcoin Now that you have Bitcoin you will do this exact same process, but instead of selling Zcash, you will be buying Stellar Lumens (XLM). Congratulations, you now own Stellar. What is Stellar? Stellar is a decentralized, hybrid blockchain that is fully open-source. It is infrastructure that exists to facilitate cross-asset transfers of value, including payments. With just one integration into the Stellar Network, you will join an open, global financial network where all actors – be they people, payment networks, or banks – have equal access & economic participation. What are lumens? Lumens are the native asset of the Stellar network. Native means that lumens are built into the network. Asset is how the network refers to an item of value that is stored on the ledger. One lumen is a unit of digital currency, like a bitcoin. While you can’t hold a lumen in your hand, they are essential to the Stellar network—they contribute to the ability to move money around the world and to conduct transactions between different currencies quickly and securely. What is XLM? XLM is shorthand for lumen. Most currencies have 3-letter codes (USD, EUR, AUD, BTC) as an international standard. 5. JOHANNESBURG/BERLIN (Reuters) - Shocked Steinhoff shareholders have wiped more than $12 billion off its value since it revealed "accounting irregularities" and parted ways with its chief executive, in a dramatic fall from grace for the South African retailer. Once a must-have for investors who backed its reinvention as a retail empire including brands such as Mattress Firm and Poundland under veteran CEO Markus Jooste, Steinhoff shares fell by 43 percent on Thursday, compounding the previous day's more than 60 percent fall. This collapse leaves South African tycoon Christo Wiese, Steinhoff biggest shareholder and chairman, seriously out of pocket, eroding more about $2.8 billion of his net worth. It also prompted an urgent call by South Africa's Finance Minister Malusi Gigaba for pension fund managers to report back on their exposures to the sudden sell-off, saying that the accounting issue was a "grave concern". South African Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa said the Steinhoff scandal was "catastrophic". "It is catastrophic is that it destroys trust, it destroys confidence in the corporate sector," Ramaphosa said on Talk Radio 702. South Africa's Public Investment Corporation (PIC), the retailer's second-largest shareholder, said the allegations against Steinhoff were "serious concerns". The PIC, which manages civil servants' pension funds, said in a statement it holds around 10 percent of Steinhoff's stock. The shares closed down 43 percent at 10 rand in Johannesburg and were down more than 40 percent in Frankfurt, where it has had its primary listing since 2015. Steinhoff has responded by putting 76-year-old Wiese, one of the most respected business leaders in South Africa, in charge for now and calling in PwC to investigate the accounting problems, while also seeking to reassure investors by saying it has enough liquidity to fund its existing operations. Wiese, who describes himself as a "realist, pragmatist", was one of the early executives of budget clothing retailer Pepkor, which was co-founded by his parents in the 1960s in Upington on the southern edges of the Kalahari desert. He studied law in Stellenbosch, a close-knit town dominated by Afrikaans-speaking whites, but now lives in Clifton, an affluent area of Cape Town overlooking the Atlantic Ocean and is best known for transforming budget grocer Shoprite from just six shops in the 1970s to hundreds of stores across Africa. SHOPPING SPREE Wiese and Jooste were instrumental in reinventing Steinhoff, turning it from a modest distributor of furniture made in communist-era eastern Europe to a global household goods retailer, vying for market share with the likes of IKEA. Steinhoff has been on shopping spree since 2011 when it took over French furniture retailer Conforama. Last year's string of acquisitions included Mattress Firm and Poundland, thrusting it firmly on to investors' radar screens. "Whether Steinhoff's zealous expansion tactics amount to a winning or losing strategy really does depend on the outcome of the investigation," said Erika Sirimanne, Head of Home and Garden Research, Euromonitor International. Steinhoff has been under investigation for suspected accounting irregularities by the state prosecutor in Oldenburg, Germany since 2015. Four current and former managers are under suspicion of having overstated revenues at subsidiaries, German prosecutors said this week. Steinhoff has previously said that move related to whether revenues were booked properly, and whether taxable profit was correctly declared. 6. Legal experts have raised concerns surrounding the recently published Competition Amendment Bill, with some warning that some of the changes proposed by the Bill could have serious repercussions for businesses around the country. The draft bill is aimed at addressing the racially-skewed spread of business ownership in South Africa by making it easier for black-owned businesses to enter the market and by advancing transformation of current business. This will be done by breaking up current cartels (thereby encouraging new businesses into the arena) as well as punishing firms that don’t meet these new objectives. In effect, this means that the Competition Commission must also consider public interest issues (such as race) when considering business practices. However there is currently an “extreme apathy” from business towards the Bill, said Ros Lake, a top competition lawyer who represents some of the largest companies in South Africa at legal firm Norton Rose Fulbright. This is disconcerting as the Bill holds far-reaching implications for South African businesses, given the expanded powers proposed to enable the competition authorities to intervene in markets and commercial transactions, she said. “Perhaps they have not thought through the impact of the changes, but people need to comment and they need to get on board, if we don’t there is a real risk that these changes will be railroaded and we just won’t have certainty. We will spend years in litigation trying to figure out what the Act actually means.” “Some of the provisions are hard to understand and many of the intentions haven’t been carried through. These things have to be corrected. Some of the provisions are just too drastic and inconsistent with economic policy. We have to develop policies that work for South Africa, but they have work and be workable,” she said. “The compliance cost for companies is going to be extraordinary,” she said. “Sections that are untested now carry the first-time penalty and there are a number of tweaks required.”
  7. Statistics South Africa has published a graph showing how much the average South African family spends on gifts for their parents, grandparents and children. The gift prices were sourced from a combination of the Consumer Price Index (CPI) for November 2017, as well as the registry of recorded live births for 2016. According to the data, Dads receive the most expensive gifts with the average present costing R776.22 – an increase of 1.2% In comparison, South African moms typically receive presents worth only R328.74 – a significant decrease of 11.6% compared to presents last year. The only other decrease was seen in gifts for male children which typically cost R173.95 in December 2017 – down 6.2% when compared to gift prices earlier this year. You can find the full list of expenses detailed below.

It grew under Basson from eight tiny stores with a combined value of R1 million into Africa’s largest retailer, with a market cap of R127 billion. Basson was, until his retirement at the end of last year, South Africa’s best-paid executive, by far. In 2016; Basson’s remuneration totaled R100.1 million. Shoprite was also compelled to buy back shares from Basson to the value of R1.8 billion. [video=youtube]

  21. [video=youtube] Edmund Kemper: In His Own Words With the release of Netflix new series entitled Mindhunter there has been a resurgence of interest in one particular serial killer who is depicted throughout, his name is Edmund Kemper or ‎The CoEd Killer. This film manages to combine two interviews together with a sprinkle of dramatisation to give us great insight into Ed’s mind and the motives which lay behind his crimes. If you have seen Mindhunter you will be familiar with a lot of what is said in these interviews as they heavily influenced the dialog scripted for his character. The first interview was recorded in 1984 and the second is from 1991. We quickly learn of the root cause for Kemper’s hatred towards women, his mother. At the age of 9 Kemper witnessed his parents go through a rough divorce. Now stuck living with his two sisters and mother, Clarnell, he is the victim to much psychological abuse much of which comes directly from his mother who constantly belittled Kemper on account of his size and mocks his ‘weirdo’ personality. His mother increasingly enforced the ‘fact’ that no woman will ever love him, teaching him to hate himself, but as a result it was everyone else Kemper started to hate, especially women.
