  4. Durban – ANC Youth League (ANCYL) president Collen Maine says the league wants and needs the rand to fall so that when it rises again, the country's economy will be under their control. "We want the rand to fall, we need those economic turntables. The rand will fall but when it rises, we will be in charge of the economy of South Africa," he said. Maine was addressing more than 2 000 people on Wednesday at a lecture on economic freedom at Durban's Olive Convention Centre. He said those who had made objections against the country's controversial multibillion-rand nuclear programme had done so because they would not benefit, "and all of them are white". He challenged the youth league to compose a song titled Jacob Zuma, Economic Freedom Is In Your Hands. "Once you get attacked by capital, it wins. "This rand thing comrades, it is very problematic. During the local government elections, when it was said that the ANC was not doing well, the rand gained strength, but when the ANC wins somewhere else, the rand depreciates," Maine said. The foreign exchange market (forex, FX, or currency market) is a global decentralized market for the trading of currencies. This includes all aspects of buying, selling and exchanging currencies at current or determined prices. In terms of volume of trading, it is by far the largest market in the world.

  13. London — As investors and investigators weigh the damage of Yahoo's massive breach to the internet icon, information security experts worry that the record-breaking haul of password data could be used to open locks up and down the web. While it's unknown to what extent the stolen data has been or will be circulating, giant breaches can send ripples of insecurity across the internet. "Data breaches on the scale of Yahoo are the security equivalent of ecological disasters," said Matt Blaze, a security researcher who directs the Distributed Systems Lab at the University of Pennsylvania, in a message posted to Twitter. A big worry is a cybercriminal technique known as "credential stuffing," which works by throwing leaked username and password combinations at a series of websites in an effort to break in, a bit like a thief finding a ring of keys in an apartment lobby and trying them, one after the other, in every door in the building. Software makes the trial-and-error process practically instantaneous. Credential stuffing typically succeeds between 0.1 percent and 2 percent of the time, according to Shuman Ghosemajumder, the chief technology officer of Mountain View, California-based Shape Security. That means cybercriminals wielding 500 million passwords could conceivably hijack tens of thousands of other accounts. "It becomes a numbers game for them," Ghosemajumder said in a telephone interview. So will the big Yahoo breach mean an explosion of smaller breaches elsewhere, like the aftershocks that follow a big quake? Ghosemajumder doesn't think so. He said he didn't see a surge in new breaches so much as a steady increase in attempts as cybercriminals replenish their stock of freshly hacked passwords. It's conceivable as well that Yahoo passwords have already been used to hack other services; the company said the theft occurred in late 2014, meaning that the data has been compromised for as long as two years. "It is like an ecological disaster," Ghosemajumder said in a telephone interview. "But pick the right disaster. It's more like global warming than it is an earthquake. ... It builds up gradually." The first hint that something was wrong at Yahoo came when Motherboard journalist Joseph Cox started receiving supposed samples of credentials hacked from the company in early July. Several weeks later, a cybercriminal using the handle "Peace" came forward with 5,000 samples — and the startling claim to be selling 200 million more. On Aug. 1 Cox published a story on the sale , but the journalist said he never established with any certainty where Peace's credentials came from. He noted that Yahoo said most of its passwords were secured with one encryption protocol, while Peace's sample used a second. Either Peace drew his sample from a minority of Yahoo data or he was dealing with a different set of data altogether. "With the information available at the moment, it's more likely to be the latter," Cox said in an email Tuesday. The Associated Press has been unable to locate Peace. The darknet market where the seller has been active in the past has been inaccessible for days, purportedly due to cyberattacks. At the moment it's not known who holds the passwords or whether a state-sponsored actor, which Yahoo has blamed for the breach, would ever have an interest in passing its data to people like Peace . Even if the hack was a straightforward espionage operation, Gartner security analyst Avivah Litan said that wouldn't be a reason to relax. Spies can mine trivial-seeming data from apparently random citizens to tease out their real targets' secrets. "That's how intelligence works," Litan said in a phone call. Meanwhile Yahoo users who recycle the same password across the internet may still be at risk. While people can always change the passwords across all the sites they use, Yahoo's announcement that some security questions were compromised too means that the risks associated with the breach are likely to linger. A password can be changed, after all, but how do you reset your mother's maiden name?

  16. If the Films and Publications Amendment Bill is passed in its current form, South Africans may no longer upload videos to online channels, such as YouTube, Facebook, Twitter and Instagram – unless they register as a distributor and pay a registration fee, the DA said at a media briefing on Monday. The amendment, dubbed the Internet Censorship Bill, will be deliberated in Parliament on Tuesday and it is, according to the DA, “simply bad news”. DA spokesperson on communication, Phumzile van Damme, claimed that government is increasingly overplaying its hand with regard to freedom of speech. “There seems to be a firm hand in a broader project of censorship that is very worrying,” said van Damme. “The ‘Internet Censorship Bill’ in its current form gives government wide-sweeping powers to censor content on the internet,” she added. The party cited problematic provisions in the bill that broadly fall into three categories – it’s unconstitutional, it uses broad and vague terminology and it gives the minister of communications extensive powers to impose penalties on transgressors. Van Damme said the bill interferes with the powers of a Chapter 9 institution – the Independent Communications Authority of South Africa (Icasa) – in that the body would not be allowed to issue or renew broadcasting licences unless the broadcaster is registered with the Film and Publications Board. “The board cannot instruct Icasa when it may or may not issue or renew a broadcasting licence,” Van Damme said. “The board would overstep its mandate and infringe on the powers of a Chapter 9 institution,” she added. In addition, the bill seeks to curtail the distribution of digital films in that such content needs to be “pre-classified” by the Films and Publications Board. The terminology used in this provision is broad enough to include all digital videos and films – also user-generated video material – that are uploaded on social media platforms. “This is clearly unworkable,” Van Damme said. In addition, the bill also infringes on individuals’ right to privacy, according to the DA. A section in the bill states that any person who distributes a film or game classified as “X18” must keep a register when access to the content is granted to a user. The user’s name, address and age will be captured in the register and the CEO of the Films and Publications Board will have access to this register. “This is an unjustifiable breach of the right to privacy, which includes the right to not have your private communications infringed,” Van Damme said. Although two specific amendments of the bill are to be welcomed – the tightening of the definition of what constitutes child pornography and the outlawing of so-called revenge porn – the rest of the bill must be “thrown out”, Van Damme said. “The legislation currently being pushed through Parliament is unacceptable. The DA will do everything possible to ensure the bill does not pass in its current form,” she concluded.
  17. Astoria investors ‘deeply offended’ by incentive scheme for exec directors JOHANNESBURG – Some traders and investors in Mauritian-based investment company Astoria have taken to social media to voice their anger about a share option incentive scheme for executive directors calling it “shameless plundering”. The company, whose investments are run by Anchor Capital, listed on the JSE’s Alternative Exchange in November last year at R14.49, but its share price has dropped roughly 24% since listing. It closed at R11.03 on Friday. The company announced on Thursday that a share option scheme that permits the listing of up to 25 million ordinary shares has been approved, which could be offered for subscription to its executive directors. A cap is applicable at the lesser of 10% of the total issued share capital and 25 million shares. No price was disclosed. “The purpose of the scheme is to attract, motivate, reward and retain executive directors who are able to influence the performance of the company, on a basis which aligns their interests with those of the company’s shareholders,” it said.
